A Superhero Storytelling Game for Kids
It all started as a board game full of cards, tokens, and miniatures. But something unexpected happened: the real fun began when the rules disappeared! Instead of counting points and rolling dice by the book, the kids turned the heroes into characters in their own adventure. They asked questions, made bold choices, and I improvised what happened next. It became a mix of superheroes, detective stories, and comic-book drama—lightweight, silly, and full of imagination.
The Core Idea
Unepic Squad is not about being the strongest or the smartest hero. It’s about telling stories together. Players become unlikely superheroes with strange powers and silly weaknesses. Villains appear, mysteries unfold, and the group must work as a team to save the day.
How It Plays
-
One person is the Narrator (the storyteller, game master, or “comic book writer”).
-
The others play as heroes, each with unique powers and flaws.
-
The Narrator sets the scene: a city in chaos, a sabotaged spaceship, a villain on the run…
-
Players decide what their heroes do. Want to sneak into a warehouse? Challenge the villain to a duel? Use your weird power in a clever way? Try it!
-
Roll a single six-sided die:
-
5–6 = Success!
-
3–4 = Partial success (you succeed, but with a twist).
-
1–2 = Failure (something goes wrong).
-
-
If the action fits your superpower, it’s easier to succeed.
That’s all! The rest is storytelling, teamwork, and imagination.
Hero Powers (examples from the cards)
Every hero has one main ability (and maybe a smaller extra one). These give players ideas for how to act in the story:
-
Close Combat – Strong in a fist fight or when charging straight in.
-
Ranged Combat – Shoot, throw, or blast from a distance.
-
Mobility – Run fast, climb walls, or move in amazing ways.
-
Intelligence – Solve problems, crack codes, and keep special items.
-
Stealth – Sneak past guards, hide in the shadows.
-
Charm – Persuade, distract, or even befriend enemies.
-
Tech – Use gadgets, hack machines, or invent wild contraptions.
-
Magic – Cast spells, unleash mysterious powers.
-
Instinct – Sense danger, notice clues, follow your gut.
-
Chaos – Bend the rules, change the odds, and make weird things happen.
These powers don’t limit kids—they inspire creative ideas. Heroes can always try anything, but powers make success more likely (and more fun).
